Atlanta’s Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) relaunched the city’s open streets program in 2023 to get people using active mobility in the streets.

City: Atlanta, GA

Purpose: To open streets for people by taking cars out of the equation for an afternoon to create a whole new healthy, sustainable and vibrant city street experience

Lead Stakeholders: Government, Philanthropy, Community, Business

Process: Atlanta Bicycle Coalition (now Propel ATL) originated Streets Alive, inspired by ciclovía events in Bogotá, Colombia and other cities. The Atlanta phenomenon began in 2010 on Edgewood Avenue and was run by Propel ATL for 10 years.

The program was dormant through pandemic years as logistics for a more frequent Streets Alive were worked out with ATLDOT and other city leaders. This robust open street program became an ATLDOT, City of Atlanta initiative in 2023.

Atlanta Streets Alive provides a platform to foster social interactions, build a sense of community, and positive engagement with City Departments. It also highlights local businesses, artists, and cultural activities along the open streets route.

Outcomes:

  • atlstreets image - Think TennesseeFrom 2010 to 2020, Atlanta Streets Alive produced 29 open streets events, covering 83 miles of streets, drawing an estimated 1.7 million people.

  • Promotes Active Transportation: Encourages all forms of active transportation to improve public health, reduce traffic congestion, and lower air pollution.
